What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It often begins with pre-cancerous changes in cells known as dysplasia, detectable through screening tests like Pap smears.

How Cervical Cancer Develops

Cervical cancer typically develops slowly over time, starting with changes called dysplasia that may progress to cancer if not treated. Most cases are linked to persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus.

Symptoms & Risk Factors

Signs & Symptoms

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding, especially after intercourse

Screening & Early Detection

Routine screening, including Pap smears and HPV testing, plays a vital role in detecting abnormal cervical cells before they transform into cancer. Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically includes a pelvic exam followed by tests like colposcopy, biopsy, and imaging (e.g., ultrasound or MRI) to confirm the presence and extent of disease.
